[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The Criterion]

English Translation of Al-Quran
[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The
Criterion]

Ayat 54. And it is He Who has created man from water, and has appointed for him kindred by blood, and kindred by marriage. And your Lord is Ever All-Powerful to do what He will.
Ayat 55. And they (disbelievers, polytheists, etc.) worship besides Allah, that which can neither profit them nor harm them, and the disbeliever is ever a helper (of the Satan) against his Lord.
[Tafseer] of Ayat 54. It is He Who has created man from water then has He established relationships of lineage and marriage: for thy Lord has power (over all things). The basis of all living matter in the physical world, protoplasm, is water and notes thereon. Water is a fluid, unstable thing: yet from it arises the highest form of life known to us in this world-man. And man has not only the functions and characteristics of the noblest animals, but his abstract relationships are also typical of his highest nature. He can trace lineage and pedigree, and thus remember and commemorate a long line of ancestors, to whom he is bound by ties of piety, which no mere animal can do. Further, there is the mystic union in marriage: it is not only like the physical union of animals, but it gives rise to relationships arising out of the sexes of individuals who were not otherwise related to each other. These are physical and social facts. But behind them, again, is the symbolic lesson of spiritual contrasts: as there is a long way to go between water and man, so there is a long way to go between an ordinary man and him who is lifted up to divine Light. As opposite sexes, though different in function, are one and contribute to each other’s happiness, so persons of diverse talents may unite in the spiritual world for their own highest good and in the service of Allah. [Tafseer] of Ayat 55. Yet do they worship, besides Allah, things that can neither profit them nor harm them: and the Misbeliever is a helper (of Evil), against his own Lord! Here is the highest contrast of all—material things which are inert, and Allah, Whose goodness and power are supreme; Faith and Unfaith, meriting glad tidings and admonition; the selfish man who is self-centered, and the man of God, who works for others without reward.

[Abu Dawud Hadith # 3664]

English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "He who does not acquire knowledge with the sole intention of seeking the Pleasure of Allah but for worldly gain, will not smell the fragrance of Jannah on the Day of Resurrection.”
[Abu Dawud
Hadith #
3664].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Furqan Ayat 57.""No reward do I ask of you for this (that which I have brought from my Lord and its preaching" This Hadith has an inducement for acquiring knowledge for the Pleasure of Allah alone. If a religious scholar acquires it to make it a means of worldly gains, then it turns to such a serious crime that such a scholar will not even smell the fragrance of Jannah (i.e., he will not enter it along with the saved). May Allah save us from it. However, if a scholar gains wealth and worldly gains through it without any intention, then it is altogether a different matter. In that case, it is not harmful for him as long as he uses it in a manner pleasing to Allah.

[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The Criterion]

English Translation of Al-Quran
[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The
Criterion]

Ayat 56. And Allah sent you (O Muhammad SAWW (PBUH) only as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner.
Ayat 57. Say: "No reward do I ask of you for this (that which I have brought from my Lord and its preaching, etc.), save that whosoever wills, may take a Path to his Lord.
[Tafseer] of Ayat 56. But thee We only sent to give glad tidings and admonition. 57. Say: "No reward do I ask of you for it but this: that each one who will may take a (straight) Path to his Lord."

[Muslim Book 35, Chapter 13, Hadith # 6528].

English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Musa Al-Ashari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: We accompanied the The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) in a journey, and when we climbed up a height, we proclaimed aloud: "La ilaha illallah (There is no true god except Allah)” and "Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest).” The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) admonished us saying, "O people, take it easy. He Whom you are calling is not deaf or absent. He is with you (i.e., by His Knowledge), He is Hearing and He is Near.” [Muslim Book 35, Chapter 13, Hadith #
6528].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Furqan Ayat 60.""Prostrate to the REHMAN Most Beneficent (Allah)!" This Hadith tells us that in the pronouncement of the fundamental testification of Islam: "La ilaha illallah (there is no true god except Allah)” (Tahlil) – and His Magnification: "Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greatest)” (Takbir) – the voices of the Companions became a bit louder during a journey. The Prophet [SAWW](PBUH) disapproved of it and commanded them not to put themselves to hardship by remembering Allah in a loud voice, and directed to do that calmly in a dignified, low voice.

[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The Criterion]

English Translation of Al-Quran
[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The
Criterion]

Ayat 58. And put your trust in the Ever Living One [Allah] Who dies not, and glorify His Praises, and Sufficient is He as the All-Knower of the sins of His slaves;
Ayat 59. Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six Days. Then He Istawa (rose over) the Throne (in a manner that suits His Majesty). The Most Beneficent (Allah)! Ask Him, (concerning His Qualities, His rising over His Throne, His creations, etc.), as He is Al-Khabir (The All-Knower of everything i.e. Allah).
Ayat 60. And when it is said to them: "Prostrate to the REHMAN Most Beneficent (Allah)! They say: "And what is the Most Beneficent? Shall we fall down in prostration to that which you (O Muhammad ) command us?" And it increases in them only aversion.
[Tafseer] of Ayat 58. And put thy trust in Him Who lives and dies not; and celebrate his praise; and enough is He to be acquainted with the faults of His servants; Allah knows our faults better than we or anyone else. It is no use hiding anything from Him. We must put our trust completely in Him. His care is for all, and He is Allah Most Gracious. [Tafseer] of Ayat 59. He Who created the heavens and the earth and all that is between, in six days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of authority). Allah Most Gracious: ask thou, then, about Him of any acquainted (with such things). The argument is about the question, "in whom shall we put our trust?" Worldly men put their trust in worldly things: the righteous man only in Allah. The true distinction will be quite clear from a ray of divine knowledge. If you do not see it all clearly, ask of those who possess such knowledge. [Tafseer] of Ayat 60. When it is said to them, "Adore ye ((Allah)) Most Gracious!", they say, "And what is ((Allah)) Most Gracious? Shall we adore that which thou commandest us?" And it increases their flight (from the Truth). Those who have no spiritual Light cannot understand this precept about putting all our trust in Allah. It seems to them foolish. They have no faith, or but a superficial faith. They may possibly pronounce the name of Allah on their lips, but they cannot understand the full significance of His tide of Rahman (Most Gracious). Perhaps they are afraid on account of their sins; perhaps they do not see how unbounded is the mercy of Allah. Such men are contrasted against the true servants of Allah, who are described in next ayats from 63 to 75.

Earthquakes according to Islam.
Earthquakes are one of the great signs of Allah in this universe, with which He tests His slaves as a reminder or to instil fear of Him or as a punishment. Man must remember, when the signs occur, his weakness, incapability, humble status before Allah and his need of Him, so he turns to Allah, may He be exalted and glorified, in supplication, beseeching and humility, in the hope that Allah will lift this great distress from the people.
Allah says (interpretation of meaning):
16.Do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allâh), will not cause the earth to sink with you, then behold it shakes (as in an earthquake)?
17. Or do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven (Allâh), will not send against you a violent whirlwind? Then you shall know how (terrible) has been My Warning? [067:16-17]
Allah says (interpretation of meaning):
42. Verily, We sent (Messengers) to many nations before you (O Muhammad). And We seized them with extreme poverty (or loss in wealth) and loss in health with calamities so that they might believe with humility.
43. When Our Torment reached them, why then did they not believe with humility? But their hearts became hardened, and Shaitân (Satan) made fair¬seeming to them that which they used to do.
44. So, when they forgot (the warning) with which they had been reminded, We opened to them the gates of every (pleasant) thing, until in the midst of their enjoyment in that which they were given, all of a sudden, We took them to punishment, and lo! They were plunged into destruction with deep regrets and sorrows.

Al-Baqara [2:35]

Al-Anfal [8:22]

For the worst of beasts in the sight of Allah are the deaf and the dumb― those who understand not.
                                                                                                            ( Al-Anfal 8:22)

[Muslim Book 05, Chapter 35, Hadith # 6525]

English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "He who repents before the sun rises from the west, Allah will forgive him".
[Muslim Book 05, Chapter 35,
Hadith #
6525].
Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Furqan Ayat 45."the decline of the sun, and had there been no sun light, there would have been no shadow" Taubah means returning to Allah from sins. When a person commits a sin, he goes away from Allah. When he repents, he returns to Allah and desires for being pardoned by Him, and getting near Him. This returning towards Him is Taubah. When it is said that `Allah turns towards him’, it means that Allah accepts his repentance.

[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The Criterion] Ayat 45

English Translation of Al-Quran
[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The
Criterion]

Ayat 45. Have you not seen how your Lord spread the shadow. If Allah willed, He could have made it still then Allah made the sun its guide [i.e. after the sunrise, it (the shadow) squeezes and vanishes at
midnoon and then again appears in the afternoon with the decline of the sun, and
had there been no sun light, there would have been no shadow].
Ayat 46. Then We withdraw it to Us a gradual concealed withdrawal.
[Tafseer] of Ayat 45. Hast thou not turned thy vision to thy Lord? How He doth prolong the shadow! If He willed, He could make it stationary! then do We make the sun its guide; We saw in 24:35 that Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. We have now, another sublime passage, in which we are asked to contemplate the Glory of Allah by a parable of the subtle play of Light and Shade in Allah’s creation. In our artificial life and surroundings we fail to see some of the finest mysteries of Light and Shade. We praise, and rightly so, the wonderful colours of sunset. We see, particularly in climates more northerly than that of India , the subtle play of Light and Shade in the twilights succeeding sunsets. If we were as assiduous in seeing sunrises and the play of Light and Shade preceding them, we should see phenomena even more impressive, as the early morning seems to us more holy than any other time in the twenty-four hours of the sun’s daily journey. There is the first false dawn, with its curious uncertain light and the curious long uncertain shadows which it casts. Then there are the streaks of black in the East, succeeded by the true dawn, with its delicate tones of colours, and light and shade. The light of this true or false Dawn is not given by the direct rays of the sun. In a sense it is not light, but the shadows or reflections of light. And they gradually merge into actual sunrise, with its more substantial or more defined shadows, which we can definitely connect with the sun. The morning shadows are long but more definite, and their length and direction are seen to be guided by the sun. But they change insensibly every second or fraction of a second. Tafseer of Ayat 46. Then We draw it in towards Ourselves,- a contraction by easy stages. As the sun rises higher and higher, the shadows contract. In regions where the sun actually gets to the zenith at noon , there is no shadow left at that time. Where does it go? It was but a shadow cast by a substance and it gets absorbed by the substance which produced it. Let us now reverently turn our vision (as far as we are able) to the symbolic meaning. Allah is the Light. All things in creation-whether concrete or abstract-are but shadows, depending on His Light. All shadows are not equal. He gives length or size of substance to such as He pleases. And some shadows almost become reflected lights, like the light of the false or the true Dawn. Such are holy men, in all kinds of gradations. The shadows are constantly in a state of flux; so are all things in Creation, all things we see or covet in this life. Allah, if He wills, can give some of them greater fixity or comparative stability.

Al-Ahzab [33:40]

muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but (he is) the Messenger of Allah, and the Seal of the Prophets: and Allah has full knowledge of all things.

Aal-e-Imran [3:144]

muhammad is no more than an Messenger: many were the Messengers that passed away before Him. If he died or was slain, will ye then turn back on your heels? If any did turn back on his heels, not the least harm will he do to Allah; but Allah (on the other hand) will swiftly reward those who (serve him) with gratitude.

Al-Baqara [2:274]

Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by night and by day, in secret, and in public, have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.

[Muslim Book 42,Chapter 01, Hadith # 7058]

English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "The world is the believer’s prison and the infidel’s Jannah".
[Muslim Book 42,Chapter 01, Hadith #
7058]

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Furqan Ayat 43 "Have you seen him who has taken as his ilâh (god) his own desire?" As compared with the pleasures and luxuries, which are in store for a true believer in Jannah in the Hereafter, this world is a prison; and against the ceaseless torture that awaits the Kuffar (disbelievers) in Hell, this world is a Jannah for them. It can also mean that the way a Muslim saves himself in life from lusts and desires and leads a pious life with fear of Allah, this world is a prison for him because he is fettered in the chains of rules and regulations, while a Kafir (disbeliever) is free from all kinds of restrictions and is completely given to lusts and desires, and this is how this world is a Jannah for him. The purpose of this Hadith is to induce Muslims for the preparation of Al-akhirah (the Hereafter) and prevent them from unlawful luxuries of this world.

[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The Criterion]

English Translation of Al-Quran
[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The
Criterion]

Ayat 43. Have you (O Muhammad SAWW (PBUH) seen him who has taken as his ilâh (god) his own desire? Would you then be a Wakîl (a disposer of his affairs or a watcher) over him?
Ayat 44. Or do you think that most of them hear or understand? They are only like cattle; nay, they are even farther astray from the Path. (i.e. even worst than cattle).
[Tafseer] of Ayat 43. Seest thou such a one as taketh for his god his own passion (or impulse)? Couldst thou be a disposer of affairs for him? The man who worships his own passions or impulses or desires is the most hopeless to teach or lead or guide. If it were anything else the matter with him, the Teacher could argue with him. But Reason cannot prevail over blind passion. It is vain to hope that such a man could be led, until his mad desires are killed. No one could undertake any responsibility for him, for he obeys no law and follows no advice. He is worse than brute beasts, which may not understand, but at least follow the wholesome instincts implanted in them by Allah. The lawless man has killed his instincts and is unwilling to submit to guidance. Tafseer of Ayat 44. Or thinkest thou that most of them listen or understand? They are only like cattle;- nay, they are worse astray in Path.

[At-Tirmidhi Hadith # 2317].

English Translation of Hadith
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) said, "It is from the excellence of (a believer’s) Islam that he should shun that which is of no concern to him".
[At-Tirmidhi
Hadith #
2317].

Lesson : as mentioned above in Surah Al-Furqan Ayat 33."And no example or similitude do they bring (to oppose or to find fault in you [SAWW](PBUH) or in this Qur’an)" This Hadith lays down a very important principle that one should avoid senseless talk and actions. If one acts upon this principle, he can save himself from many sins and evils.

[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The Criterion]

English Translation of Al-Quran
[25].Surah Al-Furqan [The
Criterion]

Ayat 33. And no example or similitude do they bring (to oppose or to find fault in you [SAWW](PBUH) or in this Qur’an), but Allah reveal to you (The Messenger of Allah [SAWW](PBUH) the truth (against that similitude or example), and the better explanation thereof.
Ayat 34. Those who will be gathered to Hell (prone) on their faces, such will be in an evil state, and most astray from the (Straight) Path.
Ayat 35. And indeed Allah gave Mûsa (Moses) the Scripture [the
Taurat (Torah)], and placed his brother Harun (Aaron) with him as a helper;
Ayat 36. And Allah said: "Go you both to the people who have denied Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)." Then We destroyed them with utter destruction.
[Tafseer] of Ayat 33. And no question do they bring to thee but We reveal to thee the truth and the best explanation (thereof). Divine knowledge is a fathomless ocean. But glimpses of it can be obtained by any individuals sincerely searching for the Truth. Their progress will be in grades. If they ask questions, and answers are then furnished to them, they are more likely to apprehend the Truth, as they have already explored the part of the territory in which they are interested. In the same way, when concrete questions arise by the logic of events, and they are answered not only for the occasion, but from a general stand-point, the teaching has a far greater chance of penetrating the human intelligence and taking shape in practical conduct. And this is the usual way of instruction in the Qur’an.
